HISTORY

1651 Colonel Earl Ludvig Wierich Lewenhaupt received 17 estates as fees from the state.

He united three of them and gave the name Charlottenborg thus remembering his wife Charlotte.

The principal building was erected around 1660 but today's estate is the result of later reconstructions, one also done during the 19th century.

During the suppression in the late 17th century most of the fees which formed Charlottenborg´s estate were drawn in by the Swedish crown.
Ludwig Lewenhaupt´s heirs managed through trading to keep the castle and some of the closest mansions.

Charlottenborg has since been in the possession of various families and it was sold to the Motala municipality in 1959.

Since 1984 Motala Museum's collections are located here and here we also find a genuine castle ghost!
